Work Experience

Marika’s youth development experience began over 15 years ago as a frontline youth worker at the Halle Q. Brown Community Center in St. Paul and the Sabathiny Community Center in Minneapolis. She continues to stay connected directly to the field by her many volunteer activities including mentoring as well as facilitating an African American Girls Group. In addition to her background in youth development Marika’s diverse work experience includes a 7 year tenure with the St. Paul Public School District (SPPS). She also has worked in the field of Community Development at the intermediary level for the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC).

Current Role

During her time at the University of MN Youth Work Institute Marika’s role has evolved from coordinating community networks and facilitating workshops to include work at the legislative level concerning policy and the field of youth development. Marika has been instrumental in developing the Children and Youth Legislative Caucus newly convened in 2009. Another new area of focus includes building technological capacity & access for the field by training, monitoring and managing new and evolving technologies to support the transition of traditional face to face training and workshops to a blended approach that includes web learning and distance education. Marika also helps agencies and organizations understand their professional development needs through a number of tools developed to help individuals and agencies be intentional about their long term professional development plans.
