Minnesota's local and regional food system includes the production of sweet corn, peas, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, squash, pumpkins, green beans, carrots, apples, grapes, strawberries and blueberries, and other specialty or niche crops. Unlike many sectors of Minnesota’s agricultural economy, commercial vegetable and fruit production is growing steadily. Commercial growers want new research information and education on refining production and marketing practices to produce healthy foods and enhance profitability. Our program’s research and education focuses on early-season stand establishment and development of integrated cropping systems that improve production efficiency, use fewer inputs, and protect natural resources.
