Parenting Parenting Research
Public Awareness
The public awareness component of the project, also
a form of education, attempts to raise public awareness about
the hitting of children. These efforts include "no-hit
days" decreed by county commissioners and/or mayors and
city councils in Goodhue, Ottertail, Clay and other Minnesota
counties; magnets with gentle discipline messages for placement
on refrigerators, file cabinets, auto dashboards, or other
metal surfaces; table tents with discipline messages placed
on restaurant and business dining tables; grocery cart and
grocery bag messages; church bulletin inserts; sermons; media
coverage; displays; presentations at many conferences and
events; and others.
The project and its team members have cooperated in various
ways with a number of anti-violence campaigns and initiatives,
including: Violence-Free Families and Communities in Ramsey
County, Hennepin County Initiative for Violence-Free Families,
Minnesota and Wisconsin Children’s Trust Funds, Center for
Reducing Rural Violence, Center for Restorative Justice and
Mediation, Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse, Turn
Off the Violence, Minnesota Partnership for Non-Violent Communities,
Minnesota Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse, Minnesota
Make the Peace campaign, Growing Communities for Peace, various
County Child Abuse Prevention Councils, various local Violence
Prevention Councils, various women’s shelters and domestic
abuse programs, among others.
Finally, the project has a product line with Positive
Parenting logos and messages—sweat shirts, tee shirts,
cardigans, mugs, travel mugs, tote bags, pencils, magnets,
buttons, and other items. Mostly these are used as gifts to
programming partners, trainees, and parents participating
in project programs—to recognize achievements and to foster
project visibility. But items also are sold to programs and
public.
