The science of growing food

Kanabec County

Master Gardener with young girls working in garden

Kanabec County Master Gardeners collaborated with area organizations to provide a comprehensive vegetable gardening program to fifth graders from Trailview Elementary School in Mora.

Students started seeds and tended seedlings in the greenhouse, and then planted outside. They learned when and how to harvest and how to put the garden to bed. A vegetable tasting party introduced students to new veggies.

Master Gardeners took students to a local organic farm where they learned about honey bees, fungi, and how farmers extend the growing season with the use of hoop houses. Students also worked with Master Gardeners and others at their community garden and donated harvested produce to the local food shelf.
