Reducing runoff for a healthier Mississippi River

Goodhue County

Anoka County Veterans Memorial and Peach Garden

Goodhue County Master Gardeners planted and help maintain a rain garden installed at Pottery Park in Red Wing, which is reducing the amount of polluted runoff reaching the Mississippi River. The rain garden was planted next to a large parking lot and designed to capture and infiltrate close to 10,000 gallons of rainwater runoff during a one-inch rain event.

Master Gardeners have turned the rain garden into a living classroom, where they host on-site educational events. Tour groups learn how rain gardens work, the benefits of planting native plants, and how native plants benefit pollinators. Interpretive signs at the site continue the learning experience.
