2005 Midwest Dairy Expo

The 2005 Midwest Dairy Expo was the 33rd annual year for this program, which is one of the largest dairy educational events in the state. The UM Extension Service holds the event in partnership with Minnesota Milk Producers Association and the Professional Dairy Heifer Growers Association. Dairy producers and professionals are all welcome at this popular event!

This presentation will be based upon Dr. Kohl’s research, travel and front-line view as he visions the global agricultural landscape including his hard-hitting viewpoint of consumer trends, global competiveness, farm structure, age wave, biotechnology, and all the issues that planners wrestle with.

Whether you’re a producer, agrilender, or agribusiness, understanding what makes a good business great is critical. Based upon extensive research of 400 commercial farms and agribusinesses, this presentation will examine the management proficiencies that elevate performance in farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses. Yes, strategic planning pays; adopting technology, having a transition plan, knowing and understanding cost and the bottom line all have been found to provide the financial edge. The presentation will provide a take-away scorecard that participants can take home, analyze and execute.

The Business Coach
Dr. David Kohl

In this presentation, Dr. Kohl will take his past experiences as a collegiate basketball coach and apply them to transitioning and trouble-shooting the business. He will discuss the dynamics of what it takes to bring the younger generation back in and gracefully exit the older generation. Included will be the pitfalls of transition management and why it is becoming a bigger issue. The role of profits, communication, and growth management is sure to energize an audience ranging from 8 to 80 years of age! A transition management scorecard for execution of the strategy will be a take-away.

Making Decisions Under Fire
Lonnie Greener with Brad Burklund

Lonnie Greener, dairy producer from Foley, faced a major decision when a fire destroyed ½ his tie stall in the fall of 2003. . After pondering all his options Lonnie decided to stay in the dairy industry. He built a new free stall barn, used existing manure storage and put a used parlor in the remainder of his tie stall barn. Learn about what Lonnie did and how he made decisions during that difficult time.

Environmental regulations, lawsuits, nuisance complaints about odor and manure management are becoming more of any issue on dairies of all sizes. Learn how to manage your manure to reduce the potential for losses to surface and groundwater. Dennis will discuss data coming for seven Wisconsin farms that are cooperating in a study designed to identify how management and weather affect nutrient losses.

Milk in Schools: Finding Your Voice
