Funding Sources

Extension’s 2008 annual budget of $63 million is provided from five main sources:

  • State of Minnesota - 44%, nearly $28 million
  • County governments - 22%, about $14 million, through a memorandum of understanding for funding of local Extension positions
  • Federal government - 18%, about $12 million, through federal legislation that has provided appropriations to land grant universities for nearly 150 years
  • Federal grant - 11 %, $7 million, supports food stamp/nutrition education programs
  • Program fees and gifts - 5%, $3 million
