A century old partnership
Extension is a 100 year old partnership between federal, state and county governments - providing scientific knowledge and expertise to the public.

All universities engage in research and teaching, but the nation's more than 100 land-grant colleges and universities have a third critical mission—extension. Land-grant institutions "extend" their resources, solving public needs with university resources through non-formal, non-credit programs.

The Morrill Act of 1862 established land-grant universities.

The Smith-Lever Act of 1914 formalized Extension, mandating the Federal Government (through USDA) to provide each state with funds based on a population-related formula

Extension in Minnesota
Extension faculty and staff live and work across the state, in regional and county offices as well as University campuses and research and outreach centers.
